Notes

Other fragments of this substantial glossary can be found in the MSS Lawrence, University of Kansas, Spencer Research Library, Pryce P2A: 1, and Oxford, Bodleian Library, Lat. misc. a. 3., fol. 49. This MS was certainly written in England, probably at Worcester. Lapidge (1992: 103) has pointed out that, in addition to including much Anglo-Saxon textual material, its compiler(s) also used 'materials of non-English origin, for buried among the English and Latin interpretamenta are some of Breton or Cornish origin.' Indeed, Lapidge (ibid., n. 45) draws attention to the presence of two Brittonic glosses (guohioc, gl. corupeta at fol. 43r, and petelleriou, gl. cuple at fol. 48v; cf. Ker 1957: 313) which could equally be Old Cornish or Old Breton. For the possible use of Hiberno-Latin, or perhaps more generally Celtic-Latin, sources on the part of the compiler(s) of this glossary, see Herren 1992.
