Bischoff (Kat., §52) placed the writing of this MS in ‘Westliches Frankreich’ in the last third of the ninth century. The reason for Deuffic’s (PMSB 292) inclusion of this MS in his handlist is unclear as there appears to be no evidence of Breton influence or origin. The MS begins with two short tracts that serve as introductions or primers to the exegesis of the Gospels and that may display Hiberno-Latin features (McNally 1973: 125–51). In the first of these Bischoff identified two elements of particular significance. One is a reference naming as ‘Comianus’ the author of a commentary on Mark’s Gospel (nouellum auctorem in Marcum nomine Comiano; cf. Bischoff 1976: 81–2, 88–9, and 111–12 (§14), where the MS was dated to 'saec. XI 1-med.'). Bischoff’s argument that this refers to the famous (possibly Hiberno-Latin) commentary on Mark (Cahill 1997) subsequently sparked a lively scholarly debate (e.g. Gorman 1997: 180–1; Ó Cróinín 2000: 210–12). The other element is that this work contains one of the earliest identified fragments of a commentary on the Gospels by Fortunatianus of Aquileia (Bischoff 1976: 112; Étaix and Lemarié 1974: 366–370; Dorfbauer 2013). The main work in this manuscript is an incomplete version of a commentary on the Gospels attributed to Epiphanius Latinus (Erikson 1939, though this MS was not identified at that time; Dorfbauer 2015).
