In relation to the impressive Crucifixion scene painted at fols 7v–8r, EBGB says (p. 10): 'This manuscript, which has been dated to the tenth century, though it may be a little earlier, has been assigned to the School of the Loire. It contains an inscription [at fol. 125v] which indicates that the archetype came from a bookshop of one Gaudiosus installed near St Peter ad Vincula in Rome' (for the striking Crucifixion and Deposition scenes, see also Lemoine 2003 and Kitzinger 2013; for Gaudiosus and his bookshop-workshop in fifth- or sixth-century Rome, see De Bruyne 1913, where the corrupt collocation de statione gaudio libri is reconstructed as de statione Gaudiosi librarii). Indeed, in MPF §212 this MS is ascribed generically to the 'région de la Loire'. However, Angers 24 is attributed to Brittany by Bischoff in Kat. §50. Although in the absence of a detailed palaeographical analysis it is impossible to be certain, Bischoff's attribution may well be correct, especially in view of the occurrence of the incipit formula In diuine sanctae Trinitatis honomate nunc orditur euangelium cata Matheum at fol. 7r (for Breton parallels, cf. e.g. the notes to Luxembourg, Bibliothèque Nationale, MS 89 in the present hand-list, as well as Lemoine 1989: 147). In sum, the question is still sub iudice, but the possibility of a Breton origin should be seriously taken into consideration (indeed, this MS is included by David Ganz among Breton Gospel-books in OHLP 256).
