Notes |
Deuffic (PMSB 309, §78) describes this codex as a 'manuscrit composite', but this does not seem to be the case. As for this manuscript's origin, although in Bischoff's Katalog (Kat. III, p. 103) it is ascribed to tenth-century England, this attribution is explicitly rejected by Ebersperger (1999: 198–9), who proposes instead that it was written somewhere in Francia. It is especially notable that the scholia to Priscian's Periegesis contain six glosses in Old Breton (DGVB 439–40). Although there does not seem to be any conclusive evidence that this MS was actually written in Brittany, we may nonetheless hypothesise that these glosses—and perhaps the whole text of the Periegesis—were copied from a Breton exemplar: indeed, some glosses contain a strong Breton diagnostic feature, i.e. the abbreviation ɔ-c for contra (cf. Lemoine 1985: 50; see also Lemoine 2008: 190–1, and the entry for Rome (Città del Vaticano), BAV, Reg.lat.1263 in the present Handlist). Interestingly, it has been suggested that these glosses could ultimately derive from an Irish archetype (Van de Woestijne 1949–50: 133, n. 2; Szerwiniack 1992–3: 19–20). |
