This MS is confidently attributed to Brittany in Kat. §3972, and, according to EBGB 12 (n. 2), Bischoff considered Latin 258 to be particularly close to the 'Bradfer-Lawrence' Gospel-book (Cambridge, Fitzwilliam Museum, 45-1980, a MS possibly or probably but not certainly written in Brittany). Moreover, the same scholar also pointed out that the parchment of this MS has a certain 'stiffness', similar to that of another (probably) Breton Gospel-book, namely Paris, BnF, Latin 264 (and cf. Kat. §3978). Moreover, it is notable that this MS contains a copy of the poem on the Eusebian canons that has been attributed to the Irish author Ailerán (the poem presents here a partially trimmed marginal attribution eranus dicit, probably standing for [Ail]eranus dicit); the same text can be found in another Breton Gospel-book: Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Auct. D.2.16. It should also be pointed out that neumes—possibly of the 'Breton' kind—were added, perhaps during the tenth or eleventh century, on fol. 49v and 53v (ILLB In21, p. 54).

Pending a more detailed palaeographical and iconographic analysis of this MS, we can provisionally consider Lat. 258 as the possible (or even probable) product of a Breton scriptorium, although one should also be aware of the issues on date and origin discussed in Simpson (McKee) 1999: 283–5 (cf. also Kitzinger 2013, p. 39–40, n.5, where this MS is described as 'a gospel attributed to tenth-century Fécamp').
