Notes

According to Fleuriot's Dictionary (DGVB 7), a phrase in Breton, hiat hiat altro Hilarius, altro Hilarius, badly copied from an earlier exemplar, can be read at 'fo 83'; however, no such phrase can be found at either fol. 83r or 83v: instead, it occurs at fol. 85r, in the context of a most interesting anecdote concerning a certain Breton madman who, not knowing the 'language of the Aquitanians' (Quidam ... lunaticus Britto aquitanica loquela penitus ignarus, at fol. 84v), prayed to Saint Hilary in his own 'barbaric' language (nescio quid barbarum frendens, at fol. 85r), so that the Saint may heal him. The corrupted words may stand for Old Breton (h)iac, (h)iac, altro Hilarius, 'heal, heal [me], Lord Hilarius' (cf. DGVB 211; for an edition of texts from this MS, including the miraculous anecdote in question, see the Catalogus codicum hagiographicorum latinorum antiquiorum saeculo XVI qui asservantur in Bibliotheca Nationali Parisiensi (Bruxelles and Paris 1889), vol. I, pp. 6–11, esp. p. 9).
