The Orléans codex 261 is composed of five sections. The only section relevant here is the fourth (pp. 42–135), which in turn is constituted by two Breton codicological units of different date: unit (A), pp. 42–73, and unit (B), pp. 74–135. The present entry concerns unit (B). This unit complements the abridged contents of (A) and was probably written some time after the writing of the latter (for an alternative view, see Poulin 2009: 270). Concerning the relationship between the contents of (A) and (B), Poulin (2009: 270) says: 'Ces deux entités codicologiques contiennent en fait ce qu’on pourrait être tenté de considérer comme deux versions de la Vie de Paul Aurélien; elles ont d’abord connu une existence séparée, avant d’être réunies dans leur position actuelle. [...] Une Vie longue fut coupée en morceaux et remontée en deux textes séparés, dont la longueur varie du simple au double, mais dont aucun n’est vraiment cohérent.' The passage from the Life of Gregory the Great occurring on p. 135 was added at Fleury during the second half of the tenth century or at the beginning of the eleventh, after that units A and B were brought to the Frankish abbey by Mabbo, Bishop of Saint-Pol-de-Léon.
