Connection with Brittany
Notes

In his Katalog (Kat. §3313), Bischoff indicated Brittany as the area of origin of this MS. This conclusion was based on palaeographical evidence that had been discussed by the same scholar in an earlier publication (Bischoff 1960: 161f.), where he drew attention to the similarity between the MS in question and the Landévennec Gospels (New York, Public Library, MS De Ricci 115). This conclusion was accepted by Ineichen-Eder (1978: 192), who stressed the importance of the mixture of insular and continental palaeographical features in this MS. Pending a full demonstration of Bischoff's proposal, a Breton origin remains highly probable nonetheless. It is important to mention also that Ineichen-Eder (1978: 193) identified similarities between the contents of this MS and those of Munich, BS, Clm 6407 (written at Verona at the time of Pacificus and containing an important copy of the Dicta Candidi, a collection of excerpts possibly put together by Wizo, one of Alcuin's students), as well as Paris, BnF, Lat. 13953: in view of the strong connections between these contents and the circle of Alcuin, if Clm 18961 was indeed written in Brittany, its exemplar may well have come from Tours. For a detailed identification of the various excerpts occurring in this florilegium, cf. Ineichen-Eder 1987: 194–7 (and see also Marenbon 1981: 55–7).
