Notes |
The Liber Vitae and several other entries added at fols 1r-4r, 9v-11r, 12r, 30r (on which see Clark 1995), as well as the presence of substantial Old English additions (glosses and inscriptions, cf. Ker 1957: 163), prove that this MS had reached England by the early eleventh century, and Thorney Abbey by c. AD 1100. The origin of this Gospel-book, however, is much less clear, and scholarly opinions vary. A Breton origin seems possible (especially on the basis of the decoration of its canon tables) but cannot yet be confirmed (cf. Gameson 2012b: 348–9, 'its precise place of origin (Brittany or western Francia) is debated'). |
