Notes |
In Bischoff's Kat. (I, p. 80), this MS is ascribed to a 'Bretonisches Zentrum', where it may have been written during the first half of the tenth century. Presumably these conclusions are based on Bischoff's assessment of the palaeographical evidence, as well as on the brief but careful analysis presented in Bishop 1955: 187–9 (where this MS is discussed together with Cambridge, Gonville and Caius, 144); in these notes, Bishop identifies several insular codicological features in the preparation of the Corpus Christi MS, as well as in its abbreviation system. Indeed, in view of the Breton influence on the formation of English Caroline minuscule, one wonders whether this MS could not have been written in England, perhaps at Canterbury (in which case it should probably be dated to the second half of the tenth century). Regardless of its origin, it is in any way most likely that this MS reached Canterbury at a very early stage, perhaps already towards the end of the tenth century (cf. Simpson (McKee) 2012: 340). |
