Notes

This MS contains portraits of Matthew (fol. 8r), Mark (fol. 42r, with horse head), Luke (fol. 62v), and John (fol. 95v), belonging to the so-called 'Landévennec group.' Both the script and the decoration point clearly to an origin in Brittany. While it is not possible to confirm with absolute certainly that this MS was written at Landévennec, the fact that it may have been brought to Montreuil-sur-Mer by Breton monks in the early tenth century nevertheless does lend some support to this localisation (the monastery of Landévennec was destroyed by the Vikings in AD 913, and the community famously fled to monasteries on the Channel; cf. EBGB 17; Le Bourdellès 1995: 45).
