Connection with Brittany
Notes

Bischoff (Kat. III, 367) ascribed this fragment to tenth-century Brittany, describing its contents as 'Adnotationes evangeliis.' In fact, these folios contain a section from Isidore's Allegoriae ex Novo Testamento (or perhaps from Rhabanus Maurus's De Universo IV, 1, De his personis quae ad Novum Testamentum pertinent), bearing the title Adnotationes euangeliis (fol. 61v). The question of this manuscript's possible Breton origin would require a thorough reassessment, but in the meantime we may note that ɔ is frequently used for con, and that both .i. and .id.ē. are found for id est. Moreover, there are several changes of hand (e.g. fols 66r, 67r, 67v). It should also be noted that a tenth- or eleventh-century German hand added on fol. 65v a cryptographic text usually referred to as 'Trierer Teufelssprüche': the coded text consists in an invocation to Christ against the devil (cf. Cianci 2004: 213–14; a similar coded text can be found in London, BL, Add. 10940).
