Notes |
According to Bischoff (Kat. §6857), this heavily glossed copy of Priscian's Institutiones grammaticae was written at Tours during the first half of the ninth century. The ascription to Tours has been tentatively adopted by Cinato (2015: 577), who, however, has also added a tell-tale question mark and a more general attribution to North-Western Francia. The presence of two or possibly three Old Breton glosses (Stokes 1891; DGVB 6) might point to a Breton origin, but if the dating to the first half of the ninth century is correct, then we would perhaps expect to see more marked insular features in a MS originating from a Breton scriptorium. Moreover, given that the see of Tours had (at least officially) archiepiscopal authority over Brittany, it would not be particularly strange if a Breton scribe worked in a scriptorium in the area of Tours and added a few vernacular glosses there. Alternatively, this MS may have been copied from an exemplar that already contained some Old Breton glosses (cf. the entries for Paris, BnF, Lat. 10289 and Lat. 10290). |
