Notes |
The codex now bearing the shelfmark Reg.lat.479 is an assemblage of nine fragments of various date and origin, bound together in the eleventh century (Poulin 2009: 337). Some of these components may have come from the library of Fleury, but this provenance does not seem to apply to the folios in question here (cf. LF BF1392–5). The writing of the codicological unit containing the Vita secunda sancti Samsonis must be chronologically close to the composition of the work itself, and this may indicate that it was indeed written in Brittany. However, the erasure of a mention of Samson's Breton ethnicity at fol. 11r (cf. Poulin 2009: 338, where the folio is erroneously indicated as '10v') could conversely point to this MS having been copied from a Breton exemplar by scribes working outside of Brittany (perhaps in a North-Western Frankish scriptorium?)—pace Bischoff's confident ascription of this MS to 'Bretagne' (Kat. §6685). |
