Notes

This twelfth-century manuscript is the seventh codicological unit in a Rheims miscellaneous codex containing manuscripts dating from the tenth to the twelfth centuries (CGM 38: 529–34). Saint-Thierry ex-libris marks from the twelfth and seventeenth centuries are present in the codex. The manuscript contains the second known copy of the compilation of exegetical materials appearing in Orléans, Médiathèque, 182 (Pellegrin et al. 2010: 218). It preserves three of the six Old Breton glosses found in Orléans 182, notably those appearing in the main text. The marginal entries found in Orléans 182 are absent, along with the two attached Old Breton glosses found there, as is the single interlinear gloss.

Allowing for substantial reordering of the material and textual variants, the compilation in this manuscript for the most part corresponds to that in Orléans 182, with a few notable exceptions. First, Rheims 395 preserves in full the independent works incorporated into the compilation: Bede’s Nomina regionum atque locorum de Actibus apostolorum (Laistner and Hurst 1983: 165–78) and Adrevald of Fleury’s De benedictionibus patriarcharum (PL 20.715–32)—the latter is of some significance as few early manuscripts of De benedictionibus survive (cf. Jullien et al. 1994–2015, vol. 1, pp. 37–8). The second exception is that the fragment of Jerome’s Epistola ad Marcellam and the glosses on his Epistola ad Paulinum are both lacking.
