Notes |
This is one of the MSS belonging to the so-called 'Landévennec group' of Gospel-books. Script, decoration and iconography all point univocally to a Breton origin, although it does not seem possible to confirm with absolute certainty that it was written specifically in the scriptorium of Landévennec (cf. Simpson (McKee) 1999: 185). Portraits of the evangelists occur at fols 7v (Matthew, with human head), 48v (Mark, with horse head), 73v (Luke, with ox head), 118v (John, with eagle head). It should also be noted that a marginal entry displaying some features of 'Hisperic' Latinity occurs at fol. 8r (cf. Lemoine 1995: 15–16). An instance of the 'Aethicus Hister' alphabet can moreover be found at fol. 117r. |
