Notes |
The calendar placed at the beginning of the MS contains the names of numerous Breton saints (cf. ILLB SM221, p. 112); however, these folios were probably added in the eleventh century. Nevertheless, prayers and masses to Samson, Machutus, Guoetgualus, Meuuinus and Judicaelus do occur in the main body of the MS, at fols 12v, 90v, 96v, 111r-v, 113v. This MS also contains two passages presenting Breton musical notation (fols 33v and 80v), and remarkable insular-like decorated initials can be seen, e.g., at fols 11r and 11v. Pace Duine (1922: 23–8), there seem to be no strong reasons to doubt the Breton origin of Lat. 11589, although the attribution to the abbey of Saint-Méen (in the diocesis of Saint-Malo) is perhaps less certain than is indicated in CMD III, 247 (cf. ILLB SM221, p. 111, 'L'identification reste discutée, le manuscrit est complexe'). |
