Notes |
Temple (1976: 41) described this MS as 'probably Breton', and David Ganz has recently included St John's 194 in his list of Breton Gospel-books in OHLP 257. However, it should also be noted that Bischoff (Kat. §3876) suggested more cautiously that this MS may have been written by 'a Breton scribe' ('Wohl bretonischer Schreiber'). The text does present several insular abbreviations and letter-forms, as well as a number of marginal entries written in the Greek and the so-called 'Aethicus Ister' alphabets. Many marginal additions were made in England between the tenth and the twelfth century. N.B.: I have not yet been able to consult Hanna 2002 in relation to this MS. |
