This MS belongs to the so-called 'Landévennec group' of Gospel-books (for this concept, cf. the entry for New York, Public Library, MS De Ricci 115, i.e. the so-called 'Harkness Gospels'). It is also known as 'Leofric Gospels' (not to be confused with the so-called 'Leofric Missal', i.e. Oxford, Bodleian Library, Bodley 579), as it was in the possession of the Anglo-Saxon bishop Leofric, at Exeter, in the late eleventh century (Deuffic 1985a: 270), as shown by additions written on fols 1r–2v, 6v, and 8r–14r (Ker 1957: 351); moreover, Temple (1976: 78) argued that a liturgical list in Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Bodley 155 (dated to the early eleventh century) may have been copied from this manuscript. The attribution to Landévennec is based on the mention of the three feast-days associated with Saint Winwaloe (3 March, 28 April, 13 May) in the Capitulare at fols 178r–190r; the same mentions occur also in the 'Harkness Gospels', and this is probably not a coincidence, given that these two Gospel-books are close to each other also from the textual point of view (cf. Chalker 1937: 210–4). However, the occurrence of the orthography Guingualoi (rather than earlier Uuinualoi) in the entry for 13 May in the Oxford Gospel-book (fol. 183v) suggests that this MS is somewhat later than the codex now in New York (as pointed out in Deuffic 1985a: 268). It is also worth pointing out that, as has been shown by Barbet-Massin (2013: 370), a copy of the poem on the Gospel canons attributed to the Irish exegete Ailerán (inc. Quam in primo speciosa quadriga . homo leo uitulus et aquila) occurs at fol. 22v.
